The strange selfie
“Hurry up!” shouted Alice, to her four friends she was walking with,
“I want to get there.” Alice and her four friends: Chloe, Ben, Abby and Corey were exploring Aylsham’s fascinating past. They were heading towards the town hall where there was an engraving from back in Victorian times. When they got there they saw a pale coloured brick in the wall – this was the brick with the engraving on it – “Wow that’s so cool!” exclaimed Alice. “Selfie time,” stated Ben as he pulled his blue phone out of his pocket, he snapped a picture; the five friends looked at it. “Why is it black and white?” asked Abby.
“I don’t know,” replied Ben. Suddenly, there was an uproar of conversation.
“What’s going on?” asked Abby curiously, “where are we?”
“We’re still in Aylsham, but I think we went back in time when we took the photo on Ben’s phone: look there’s Ward and Sons, and there’s the pharmacy with the still on the top, now it’s the curry house,” acknowledged Corey.
“Enough of this little history lesson Corey, let’s get a drink, I really need one,” declared Chloe. So the five of them promenaded towards the Black Boys and went inside. Suddenly, they were spoken to “Welcome to the Black Boys, public house and coaching inn,” the children had no idea who said this as there was not anyone around apart from the drinks steward- who, at the time, was drying glasses. They decided to just get a drink and go. “Excuse me, sir, please may I have five lemonades?” enquired Alice.
“Yes you may young lady,” he retorted. He took a bottle of lemonade from a fridge and poured it into five glasses. “There you go,” he said as he gave them each a glass. They walked out; as soon as their feet touched the pavement, they were swept along with an enormous crowd that took them all the way to the church.
“Why are we at the church?” beseeched Ben
“Well that was the procession of course!” reacted a voice that not one of the children had heard before “I’m sorry if I startled you, children, but that was the procession for Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, it’s now time for the feast, are you coming?” he asked.
“Yeah I guess so,” responded Alice, to the old looking man who was wearing his Sunday best and a black hat.

As they walked out of the church, there was a mille of people, all rushing to find their tables, “Where do we go?” insisted Ben “What table do we sit at?”
“Um, let’s ask someone,” echoed Abby, “Excuse me madam, do you know what table we’re supposed to sit at?” Abby enquired.
“Oh darling, you need a ticket, and your own cutlery!” she answered.
They walked away sadly then sat on a bench wondering what to do next, at that moment, a lady came up to them, “Why are you children looking so glum?” the lady questioned.
“We don’t have tickets to get into the feast,” clarified Chloe.
“Oh well don’t worry my darlings, my dear husband and my two children aren’t feeling to well so if you like, you can have their tickets!”
“Oh thank you so very much madam but that’s only three tickets and we need five,” refuted Corey.
“Oh I shan’t worry about that, one of my husband’s friends is poorly- and his wife too - so we can get their tickets, come on let’s hurry or you beauties will miss the grand feast.”
The considerate lady walked them all the way to her immense house and found the tickets inside. “There’s three, now off to Albert’s house,” (Albert was her husband’s friend) when they arrived at Albert’s house, the lady departed indoors and came back out again holding two more tickets.
“Oh thank you so very much madam- you really have been so very kind,” she strolled off, now it was time for the feast!
They ran towards the table they had to sit at and started to eat. The five children crammed food into their mouths until they could eat no more. “I can’t eat another bite,” said Chloe, “I’m absolutely stuffed,”
“So am I,” interjected Alice, “Let’s go,”

They headed towards the town hall where the engraving was and wondered, wondered how to get back to 2019. “h,how do we get back?” stuttered Abby
“Err, hmm, um, perhaps we need to take another picture,” replied Ben, “Well that’s how we got here so maybe that’s how we leave!” Ben pulled his phone from his pocket and took another picture. They were back!
